Should I stop using sunscreen?

August 22, 2023

Dear Sävvi readers,

No, you should not stop using sunscreen as summer comes to an end. Sunscreen is an essential part of your skincare routine and should be used year-round, regardless of the season. Even during autumn, winter, and cloudy days, the sun's harmful UV rays can still reach your skin and cause damage.

Here are a few reasons why you should continue using sunscreen:

  1. UV rays are present year-round: While the intensity of the sun may be less during the colder months or on overcast days, harmful UV rays can still penetrate the clouds and cause damage to your skin. UV rays are one of the primary causes of premature aging and skin cancer, so protecting your skin with sunscreen is crucial.
  1. Reflective surfaces increase UV exposure: During autumn, the sun may sit lower on the horizon, and the light can reflect off surfaces like snow, water, or even concrete, increasing UV exposure. This can be particularly concerning when engaging in outdoor activities like skiing or snowboarding.
  1. Consistent protection maintains skin health: Regular use of sunscreen helps maintain the health and integrity of your skin. It helps prevent sunburns, reduces the risk of skin cancer, and keeps your skin looking youthful by preventing photoaging (wrinkles, age spots, etc.).
  1. Sunscreen for indoor activities: Even when you're indoors, UV rays can still penetrate through windows, so if you spend a significant amount of time near windows, it's still a good idea to protect your skin. (even on a plane)!

When choosing a sunscreen, opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30. Apply it generously to all exposed skin, including your face, neck, and hands, and reapply every two hours, especially if you're spending time outdoors.

In conclusion, protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays is a year-round responsibility. Continue using sunscreen even as summer comes to an end to safeguard your skin and maintain its health and beauty throughout the year.

With gratitude

JB
